DOMICILE & COMPLIANCE

1. Move your physical presence and make Arizona your home

  • Secure a residence in Arizona — buy a home or sign a long-term lease (showing you intend to live here, not just visit). Mentors Moving & Storage+2Arizona Department of Revenue+2

  • Actually live in Arizona for a sustained period. For many purposes (such as university domicile) that means at least 12 months in Arizona with intent to make it your permanent home. Office of the Registrar+2Office of the Registrar+2

  • Abandon your former domicile (you’ll want to show you’re not treating your previous state as your primary home). Arizona Department of Revenue+1

2. Demonstrate your intent to remain in Arizona

Intent is key. You’ll want objective evidence that Arizona is your true, fixed, and permanent home. Typical examples include:

  • Obtaining an Arizona driver’s license or state ID. TaxSlayer Support+1

  • Registering your vehicle(s) in Arizona. Mentors Moving & Storage+1

  • Registering to vote in Arizona. Office of the Registrar+1

  • Filing Arizona state income tax returns as a resident. Arizona Department of Revenue+1

  • Switching your financial affairs: banking, insurance, business registration, etc., to Arizona. ARQ Wealth Advisors

3. Show documentation (proof of domicile)

Arizona regulations identify what kinds of documents may help prove domicile. See Ariz. Admin. Code § R12‑4‑124 for the kinds of evidence the state considers. Legal Information Institute Examples:

  • Arizona driver’s license with a current Arizona address. Legal Information Institute+1

  • Arizona resident income tax return. Legal Information Institute+1

  • Arizona voter registration card. Legal Information Institute+1

  • Other records showing your Arizona address: utility bills, lease/mortgage documents, bank statements, etc. wesdschools.org+1

4. Update your registrations and official ties to Arizona

  • Get an Arizona driver’s license and surrender your prior-state license (if required). Mentors Moving & Storage

  • Register your vehicle (title & registration) in Arizona. Mentors Moving & Storage+1

  • Update your address with banks, credit card companies, insurance providers, and any legal documents (will, trusts, business registrations) to reflect Arizona. ARQ Wealth Advisors+1

  • Register to vote in Arizona. Office of the Registrar+1

5. File appropriately with taxes and show financial ties

  • Understand that for tax purposes, Arizona considers domicile (your fixed, permanent home) + physical presence. Arizona Department of Revenue+1

  • If you claim Arizona as your domicile but also earn income elsewhere or maintain ties to another state, keep good documentation (to avoid being taxed as a resident elsewhere). ARQ Wealth Advisors

6. Maintain your Arizona domicile over time

  •   Once you establish domicile, you should avoid actions that undermine it (e.g., keeping your prior state as your primary home, spending more time elsewhere without intent to return, maintaining your prior state’s driver license, voting, etc.).

  • For certain classifications (like university tuition) you need to show continuous presence and intent beyond merely being a student. Office of the Registrar+1
